VLC media player 2.1.5 for Mac - Simply the best multi-format media player

If you want to play video or music files in just about any format, VLC media player is probably your answer. VLC media player is the most successful free open source multimedia player out there with over 500 million downloads according to the developers. In particular, VLC media player is a great alternative to , iTunes, and RealPlayer. It's lightweight, fast, easy to use and most importantly, plays almost anything.

Still the most powerful free media player

It was two and a half years since version 1.0 was released before version 2 ("Twoflower") brought a new interface, faster decoding and support for more formats and the ability to play HD and BluRay. It still remains however the most stable, flexible and lightweight audio and video player around today. While other media players will play unusual formats after downloading a codec, or simply refuse to play things, VLC media player handles tons of formats, from MPEG to FLV and RMBV files. Version 2 has seen some important additions too such as support for 10 bit codes plus multi-threaded decoding for H.264, MPEG-4/Xvid and WebM.
Also useful is the fact that you can use VLC media player to preview files you are downloading since it plays incomplete parts of video files. VLC media player is not just for video playback however. It also offers superb integration with video channel streaming services such as Channels.com giving you access to channels such as ESPN, Reuters and National Geographic. Just right-click or CMD-click on the playlist, select Services Discovery and Channels.com. Channels.com will then appear in your VLC media player playlist. Click on it to reveal the the different categories of channels available. Click on the category you want and a drop down list of all available channels appears in VLC media player. Just click on the channel you want to watch and streaming should begin almost immediately.

Easy to control and create playlists

VLC media player also has great hotkey support and if you take the time to learn the shortcuts so it can be controlled without touching your mouse. If you're watching DVDs or video files through it, this is not an issue. For music, it plays more or less any file and features an equalizer and playlist creation. VLC media player isn't as intuitive as iTunes as a media manager, but it's a much more flexible player in terms of file formats. You can even use VLC to convert your files, and on top of all the formats and physical media it will play, many streaming protocols and TV capture cards are supported.
VLC media player makes it easy to add subtitles to your video files too - just add the SRT file to the folder where your video is kept, and it will automatically play with subtitles.
Finally, the interface has been somewhat improved in version 2 on Mac. In fact, the Mac interface is now considerably slicker than on Windows with a single window for everything. However, it's only available in 2 colors: Lion grey and QTX black. There are also new extensions support and better Lion integration. The preferences menu is still comprehensive without being overwhelming, and there is extensive documentation online.
Don't forget to check out some of our articles such as VLC media player v KMPlayer, How to rotate a video with VLC media player, How to sync audio with video in VLC media player and How to use subtitles with VLC media player.

The ultimate free mutiformat media player

There's very little to fault with VLC media player. It's a superb lightweight media player that will successfully play the most stubborn files where other players fail.

Mozilla Firefox 32.0 - Firefox's latest - and greatest - version!

Mozilla Firefox 32.0 - Firefox's latest - and greatest - version!Mozilla Firefox is one of the World's most popular web browsers and was one of the first to break the stranglehold of Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) on the web browsing market.

Features

This is the latest version of the popular web browser and as always, Mozilla claim to have a speedier, safer browsing experience. Tests reveal that this newest version of Mozilla Firefox is certainly quick to load even the most graphics intense pages.

Firefox also now features secure connections when performing Google searches to improve privacy and there's an updated site identity indicator in the URL bar. There's only one relevant improvement in the latest version of Firefox for most users relating to security. Security has been improved with mixed content blocking which protects users from "man-in-the-middle attacks" and from eavesdroppers on HTTPS pages. There are also several bug fixes.
Mozilla Firefox's tab layout is quite similar to Google's Chrome browser, instead of seeing a blank page whenever a new tab is opened Firefox users will now be treated to icons that offer quick access to everything from bookmarks to most recently accessed and most frequently visited sites.
These icons are fully customizable in Mozilla Firefox as well. You can click and drag them to any spot you like on your name tab's page. If you're not a fan, you can also go to the grid icon on the upper right side of your browser and erase them entirely.
Firefox features Facebook integration. Firefox supports Facebook's social API so you can have dedicated buttons for Facebook in your browser. Mozilla Firefox supports Facebook's Messenger within Firefox, giving users desktop notifications as well as a persistent friends list and activity feed on the right. Conversations will open up as overlays on top of whatever website you're on so you can multitask while you chat.

Usability

Mozilla Firefox really changed the way people browse the web when it originally burst onto the scene. Today Firefox remains an incredibly powerful and customizable browser, although competition from Google Chrome has given it a definite run for its money.

Conclusion

In terms of interface, the latest version of Firefox isn't much different from previous versions, but the features it has added certainly make for a nicer, more enjoyable browsing experience overall.

Opera 24.1558.53 - A browser that's free, comprehensive and innovative

Opera is a free web browser that's fast, rich in features and innovative. Far behind Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer in terms of numbers of users, Opera is, however, the equal of its competitors and offers users a browser that's always at the forefront of technology.

Everything to let you surf easily

The Opera web browser offers all the features you need to happily surf the web. "Quick Access" and "Notebook" pages are available when you launch the browser and offer you easy access to the sites you use the most and those you've added to your favorites. At startup, Opera also offers a Discover page so you can always keep an eye on the news. It displays the news by topic and you can select the country and the language.
Opera includes a download manager, history and a private browsing mode so you can navigate without leaving a trace. It also lets you install extensions to customize your surfing experience. While the catalog is much smaller than that provided by competing browsers, you will find versions of Adblock Plus, Feedly, Pinterest, Evernote Clearly etc. for Opera.

The Opera address bar is powerful and allows you to perform searches on multiple search engines at the same time, while benefiting from the suggestions for websites that gradually appear as you type.

Excellent design and performance

Opera's ergonomic choices means you end up with a model of simplicity and practicality. The adopted codes are very similar to those adopted by other browsers and you can navigate very conveniently with Opera. The options are where you would expect them to be, and the Quick Access and Notebook pages are well thought out – generally speaking, the interface is very pleasant to use.
Opera handles the latest web standards to perfection by using the WebKit rendering engine. The latter also replaces Presto, the Opera house engine. This adoption is, however, transient, and Opera should in fact use the Blink renderer developed by Google for its Chrome browser. It's a change in direction that promises many changes, improvements and enhancements in the future.
Besides constant performance, Opera offers a functionality dedicated to slow Internet connections. The Off-Road Mode, formerly called Turbo, compresses pages to provide quick navigation, even when your connection is barely there.
In terms of the interface, Opera is friendly and adopts a modern style with a large navigation area. Its appearance is customizable with themes and you can add your own personal touch.

A web browser that's gaining momentum

Opera has all the great qualities in its category. It's comprehensive, comes with a nice interface and regularly innovates to offer its users the best possible experience. If you want to move away from Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer, then Opera is definitely the way to go.

What's new

- New default themes.
- Silent updates and lighter.
- Chromium updated to version 35.01916.114 release.

UnRarX 2.2 - Unzip RAR files on Mac with this WinRAR style extractor

UnRarX is a free WinRAR-style tool for Mac which allows you to unzip RAR files. It's easy to use via drag and drop and is powerful enough to deal with almost any archive.

Simple to upload and unzip files

UnRarX is very easy to use. Simply drag and drop RAR files onto the UnRarX interface and your files will be automatically unzipped. The extracting process appears in the main section of the UnRarX interface to indicate the progress of the extraction. The main controls for UnRarX are in the top-right of the main interface. These functions allow you to browse for a file, extract files and test files to see whether they are corrupt. If your file is password protected, just press the 'password' button and enter it to open and extract the archive.

You may encounter a few problems depending on your file type. If you receive a CRC error, it's likely that one of your RAR archives is corrupted. Also, if you experience a "UnRarX cannot extract archive" error message, try re-directing the output volume to your desktop instead of File Directory. These little glitches can make UnRarX a bit tricky for beginners but most people should experience few problems.

No developer support

Overall, UnRarX is easy to use. Unfortunately however if you do encounter problems there seems to be very little developer support for UnRarX although there is a support page with links to a forum and bug report page, where you may be able to find help with problems you're having. Note as well that UnRarX only unarchives RAR files - it won't create them for you.

A powerful archiving tool for Mac

UnRarX is one of the closest things to WinRAR on Mac for unzipping RAR archives.

Recent changes

  • Universal Binary version of UnRarX is now available
  • Version 2.2 includes current universal binary versions of unrar and par2 command line applications
  • UnRarX now includes automatic update functionality thanks to Sparkle Framework by Andy Matuschak
